My new life in Jersey

My main motivation for starting this blog was to get more comfortable with putting my writing out into the world. I started a novel in 2012 that I am now working on again, after abandoning the project to make and sell jewelry through Katie Wood Jewelry. While it was fun to make interesting pieces out of found objects, at one point even using bees, moths, and butterfly wings; my heart is always pulling me toward my lifetime goal of writing a novel and becoming a writer. I’ve been continually dissuaded from focusing on this goal by a lack of confidence that I can be successful, as well as a fear of judgement, and of course, the big one–how to make a sustainable income.

My wife and I have been given the incredible opportunity to start out fresh and reinvent ourselves, something I have attempted to do for years. This time, though, we don’t have the constant stress of making rent payments each month…and when the projected income, according to SmartAsset’s recent study shows that you need to make over $216,000 to rent a two-bedroom in San Francisco, even doctors and lawyers I know are struggling to make ends meet. http://m.sfgate.com/news/article/Here-s-what-you-need-to-make-to-afford-rent-in-7709356.php

Needless to say, as I’m figuring out what I’m doing, my blog posts will hopefully evolve to keep reflecting this transition in my life.

I was inspired this past Saturday on a day trip with friends to New York City and Brooklyn, which takes us about an hour from where we are in New Jersey.

We met for brunch at Perla (http://www.perlanyc.com) in the West Village, an adorable corner cafe that felt like it could be at home in multiple SF neighborhoods, like Cole Valley, Valencia St., or North Beach. Lovely decor, clean and modern with a rustic vibe. Super friendly staff, and delicious food.

We walked around the Village after, and though it felt more like a fall day in the city rather than spring, I didn’t mind as the crisp air was also refreshing. One of the girls is getting married in November, so we convinced her to go to this fabulous wedding and vintage dress shop, that we would have missed completely if not for the wedding dress hanging overhead on the railing of a fire escape off the second floor of a nondescript brownstone. The NY SHAREEN and Shareen bridal location is in addition to her 7,000 square foot space in Los Angeles that is her original store. (http://shareen.com/shareen-bridal/)

As soon as we walked into the store/apartment, we were greeted by a diminutive, child-like creature who introduced herself as Cat, with an equally child-like voice that she later described as creepy. We assumed that she was the owner until we met Shareen herself, a woman I can only describe as confident, cool and effortless, wearing a black, sheer, tailored vintage blouse and loose black pants with converse sneakers. Shareen told us that she used to be an actor and public speaker, and when I asked her how she got into this business, she answered simply, “by the Grace of God”. She went on to tell us about her story, and I could write pages on the intense and fascinating conversation that ensued, with all of us rapt at her conviction and eloquent and honest speaking style.

So, I will end this post to be continued, as I have lots of thoughts on this subject that I’m sure will take up more than one post.

I hope you enjoyed reading and have a fun and sun-filled Memorial weekend!

New Year, New Opportunities

Grow

I’ve been remiss in posting for far too long. The holidays flew by as they usually do and we are already more than two weeks into the new year. As I reflect back on 2013 and where I was a year ago, I am amazed at how far I’ve come. I started last year just coming off of disability and unsure where my career would go, only knowing that I wanted to make and sell my jewelry. I was fortunate to be able to take my time developing my skills and my business. I took a small business course through Women’s Initiative called Simple Steps and I can’t recommend it highly enough. The bonds/connections/friendships made were invaluable to me, and the knowledge gained and put into action will help me for years to come. Check out their website here and get involved if you can:

http://www.womensinitiative.org/index.htm

The end of the year was a bit of a whirlwind, as I started a new part time job at my old hospital to add to the part time nanny job I already had in addition to Katie Wood Jewelry. While I am completely exhausted and trying to find a balance with it all, I love each and every thing that I am doing, and that is a rare thing (and something I don’t think I’ll be ready to give up anytime soon).

You can find me at Newborn Connections Gift Shop (CPMC hospital lobby, 3700 California St.) Mondays, Tuesday mornings, Fridays and every other Sunday. We have great gifts for mom and baby as well as a variety of items for kids and adults of all ages. Our main location at 3698 California St. is ‘Your Resource from Pregnancy to Parenthood’ where we provide ongoing prenatal classes, support groups, breastfeeding and baby supplies and lactation services.

The beginning of 2014 has brought excitement and joy as my girlfriend and I just got engaged! We are so grateful to now have the opportunity to get married with the same rights as everyone else, and are looking forward to planning what we hope to be a fun and chill celebration with our friends and family. We also have a joint business venture that we are working on and plan to launch later this year, so stay tuned!

I have so many ideas and projects in the works for this year, and I know it will be a challenge to manage them all. After struggling for so many years in the past with debilitating depression, I feel the need to make up for time lost. It’s important for me to remind myself that I don’t have to do it all right away, things seem to happen at the time they are meant to, and taking care of my health always has to be my number one priority.

I wish you a year full of joy and blessings and good health!

You only have a few days left…September 29 is the last day!

Summertime is Here

I love summer (especially when I can get out of chilly SF for getaways to Cali’s hotter climates!). I just spent Memorial Weekend with friends in Santa Barbara and the weather was perfect…we spent a day at the wineries, another day at the dog beach, then had a BBQ, and went to a couple art festivals the next day — completed by enjoying ices in the park. I couldn’t ask for anything more!

I’ve been working on some pieces that include various insects. May sound a little strange, but it all started one day after I found a couple of dead bees in my sun room. They were perfectly preserved and so beautiful, so I naturally decided to make a necklace out of them. Here is a pic of the one I keep around my neck most days — someone told me they are good luck!

A few weeks ago I was walking down the beach at Fort Funston with my dog Lulu and our close friends, Kimra and her dog Maggie. Along the way we saw numerous bees and ladybugs in the sand (unfortunately very few were alive, and the ones that were struggled). I don’t know why those bees would be down there by the beach, but it made me very worried and sad. Our bees are so vital to life as we know it! Well, I tried to save a couple though I don’t think it did much good. And the rest I took home with me to immortalize in my art. I also found a beautiful moth and made this necklace with it:

Busy for Mother’s Day!

I haven’t posted in a while because I was busy with lots of custom orders for Mother’s Day (yay!) and then I was under the weather with a nasty cold (boo!). So, now I’m back and sharing some pics of a few of the pieces I made with more initials (has anyone noticed I love making jewelry with names and initials?!) I had so much fun because the people who ordered from me told me some basic guidelines and then let my creative juices flow. I love when I can get paid for playing!

Here is the first bracelet that I made for a busy mom with 5(!) children.

I decided it was too much to fit on a necklace:

My second below is available for purchase at https://www.etsy.com/listing/151756481/initialsname-bracelet-personalized

If you don’t have 5 initials to use, it can be made with your name or a word significant to you.

This one has the name of the child (Milo) with his parents initials (L.&J.) on either end:

milo

And finally (for the bracelets anyway!), this has 4 initials and an angel wing charm, but may also be made with a name or word (3-6 letters):

I’ll just share a couple of my favorite necklaces since there are so many:

I recently was asked to make an initials necklace for a former co-worker and I am really happy with how it turned out (the initials are for her 3 children):
